I am finally able to share news about what has turned out to be the biggest and the most exciting project I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. This project has been my primary focus for the entire summer of 2022.

Back in June I was contacted by a client in Saudi Arabia – They introduced me to the Festival of Light which takes place annually in Riyadh – ‘Noor Riyadh: A Festival of Light’. We discussed the idea of me traveling out to Riyadh in July to create some light paintings, but due to other summer projects and commitments this sadly wasn’t possible. I was almost certain at this stage it was going to be a rather short and fruitless conversation. However, we then discussed the idea of me creating bespoke light paintings here in the UK that could in turn be used for this project, and the rest as they say is history. As a result, I have spent a majority of my summer working on this project. I created the light paintings both on Guernsey beaches (between the hours of midnight and 5am throughout August) and in a blackout studio here in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. I ended up creating a vast library of work, and I also had the pleasure of working alongside some of the most talented landscape photographers across the world, fusing their images of iconic scenes and global landmarks with the light paintings I created. It is the scale of this project though that has truly blown my mind. The work we have produced is being used for a global advertising campaign for the Noor Riyadh Festival, and the resulting images are now being seen by millions of people worldwide. I have already started to receive photos of the artworks appearing on screens in Milan, Paris, London and Honk Kong! It is only through seeing these photos that I am now starting to appreciate the scale of this creative project. Having fallen in love with Light Painting some 15 years ago, this has been the most incredible project and journey to be a part of. It genuinely feels like all of the crazy hours I have spent practising, teaching, and making art out of light has ‘LED’ to this moment (see what I did there), and I could not have felt more prepared for something like this. The project really has been a dream come true. I hope that some of my friends across the world get to see some of the work in situ as it starts appearing on big screens in cities and airports across the globe. Projects don’t come any bigger than this for someone who does what I do for a living, and I couldn’t feel more grateful to have been entrusted with such an exciting opportunity. Thank you to Filmmaster MEA, Hill & Knowlton Strategies METIA, and Noor Riyadh for allowing me to work with you on this gem. I will never forget it.
